Mech Update - 3D Printing and CNC

Manufacturing – 3D Prints & CNC

Due to the pandemic and not having access to a laser cutter to build the base acrylic plate we had to adapt and overcome. Luckily, we had access to a CNC router which is mainly for cutting wood, so the base design was adapted to be made from wood as an initial prototype. The cad model was loaded into Fusion 360. The plate is simple with 3 main cutting operations, the first is to drill the mounting holes, then mill out the slots for the straps, and lastly cut the outside perimeter of the board. The drilling toolpath is.

To mill out the slots, no 3 mm end mill was available, so a smaller end mill was used to clear out the slots.

Lastly, the edge was milled to the correct size using a large diameter end mill.

The enclosures are 3D printed from PLA with a layer height of 0.2 mm. The parts are printed flat on the bed to make sure there are no overhangs.
