The mechanical design for the product has been completed. The mechanical design of the proposed solution can be divided into 3 components: the main platform, the individual enclosures, and the nylon straps. The following section explains in detail the purpose of each component, the engineering analysis carried out and how it meets the constraints and criteria defined for this project.
Base
The main platform will be made from Acrylic. The majority of the components excluding a few vibration motors will be mounted on the platform. The platform itself is not limited by any constraints or criteria but it will facilitate all the other components in meeting the overall constraints and criteria of the device. One of the main constraints for the device is that it must be portable. The device will be using a 3D camera to detect obstacles and identity common signs. As a result, the platform must by rigid and big enough to support all the hardware components including the 3D camera, Raspberry Pi, battery, and motors.
Individual Enclosures
The individual enclosures will be 3D printed. The primary goal of these enclosure is to hide the electronics and provide some protection. They will not be supporting any load directly, as a result there is no need to perform any stress analysis.
Enclosure #1 will be used to secure the Pi as well as motor controllers, Bluetooth module and any other electronics.
Enclosure #2 is the battery enclosure. It will also have the device name “SENSE” engraved on top. The battery enclosure is designed to hold a 5000 mAh 2S LiPo battery. The enclosure will be fitted with fire-proof material used to store LiPo batteries to protect the user in case the battery malfunctions.
Enclosure #3 will be used to secure the RealSense Camera.
Nylon Straps
The base with the enclosures will be attached to the user via nylon straps. The straps will be adjustable like a backpack strap. Detail mechanical analysis was carried out to make sure the straps will be able to support the applied load.
